Wow! I’ve just known that Electrical Engineering ITB ‘81 has many great people inside! Especially great people on Information Technology! I felt rather shocked because all of them are young lecturers and researchers I admire for their intelligence and spirit!
Consider these names (correct me if I’m wrong, I apologize for any inaccuracy):
- Bambang Riyanto -great AI figure
- Onno W. Purbo – great IT figure
- Budi Rahardjo – great IT figure (considered the best in information system security technology)
- Armein Z.R. Langi – great Rural Communication figure, director of a research center in ITB
- Suhono Harso Supangkat – Indonesia’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology Expert Staff
- Adi Indrayanto – great Neural Networks figure
Great, huh? Wow! I don’t know how it could be. Many great people comes from the same educational background from the same year. I can’t imagine the atmosphere when they studied back then. It could be so great to meet intelligent people every day back then. I felt so fascinated when I first read about these facts!
Well, maybe the greatness could be explained by one of them’s saying that said that at their times, that year’s students competed pridely with each other so hard that they never took the opportunity to cheat. It is shameful for them to cheat. Instead they struggled so hard. Pushing their limitations so hard so that they could overcome the others.
Hmmm, if I may compare their life back then with nowadays’ life, well, I feel ashamed of my year… Seems like the aura of competition and the ‘ITB-ean’ pride has gone,,
In my own year, it seems the world has turned upside down. What good becomes bad, what bad becomes good. In my year, cheating has become a COOL TREND!…
It seems so weird, but many people in my year acts like a hero, a great man who’s done something great and cool, acts like a superstar when they passed an exam without studying,, and sadly most of them are my best buddies…… And most of them told me that we who refuses to cheat are just simply stupid because everybody does it. Seems like there’s an opinion that we won’t become great people if we don’t cheat now. They always tell me that every Indonesian bureaucrate cheats. If they don’t, they will just become nothing….
I don’t know, maybe it’s just like what they said. Things change. What has become a pride becomes stupidity now. I don’t know. Maybe? But I don’t know what will happen to us when we graduates if we continue like this. Can we become what Indonesian people demand from ITB? A trouble-solver, not a trouble-maker?
I remember an old sayings that said that, “The lion only has it’s pride. If he lose it, he’ll become indifferent with a long-haired cat…”
They said that we (ITB people) were the people’s best hope. The people awaits our intelligent brains and skillful hands. But now we have lost our pride,,, the thing that differs us from the others,,, so how can they tell that we’re different from other people? If the best of us has been taken, how can we make something good?….
Well, I couldn’t write more. So many things I want to say. So many that they overload my head and just get stuck there and won’t come out. But, that’s all I want to say…
Well, the aura is not fully gone, I think there are many great guys in EL04. It’s not the aura of competition and pride that made them great, instead it’s the aura of togetherness and humbleness. They were humble of their knowledge. They show their togetherness to improve ITB and Indonesia after studying hard abroad.
If we live with only the pride of ITB, expect to get carried away and beaten by others. Being ITB-ean isn’t about proud, it’s the burden that makes it different. We would feel ashamed if we graduate but can’t contribute for Indonesia, shouldn’t we? It’s the ’sense of burden’ that’s deteriorating.

hmmmm
you’ve made your point
i agree with you, too
so, we’ll wait for you to return to build Indonesia too, Randy
hehe, yes, there are many great guys in 2004. I’ve said many were corrupted, but not all, right?
Yups, even a friend can be an inspiration. It’s never too late to change. We still have a loong way to go.
I’m attending a conference on BSD here in Tokyo, only realizing how stupid I am.. ;p
When they talk on theories, concepts,, well, I can understand a bit, a tiny bit. But when it gets to practical stuff, wow, I was just awed (didn’t understand :p). These people were the ones who made the operating system..
When we meet experts, (face-to-face, hearing them talk) it really motivates us. The atmosphere among these experts is wonderful. When they have the knowledge, they share it. When one is in trouble, they help what they can. This is how open source communities work. The more you share, the better you become. I’m sure the lecturers written on this post are well respected researchers, because they contribute to the development of technology… in their own developing country (this is an achievement in the community’s eyes, because developing nations don’t have as good resources).
Well.. I’m just a someone who is still trying to be able to do something significant.
Wish the best for all of you, never give up.
PS: Now I have something new to post on my blog, thanks
why didn’t you mention Kanjeng Raden Mas Tumenggung Roy Suryo?? he is great people too, isn’t he??
he’s not an ITB alumni, mate
just a bit of correction:
I think number 5 should be 5. Suhono Harso Supangkat

thanks for the feedback
I remember that in ‘81 we had to compete in the first year (TPB) to enter the most favorite dept. (EL in case of FTI). It was just like this last 2 years admission system of ITB. So, it is no wonder that your dept. had great people as its staff from the ‘81 class.
It’s a nice blog and keep the good work in all aspects of your personal development. Good luck for your final project and for your future, I am quite sure that you’ll be a great person too … Cheers!
Thanks, sir. You’re from ITB ‘81 too?
From your blog, I can guess that you’re from the Geophysics department? CMIIW.
Actually you’re the first lecturer that commented here. Your words flatters me. I’m very honored with your words. Thank you very much.
From your blog, I can guess that you’re the type of a lecturer who gives your heart to teach. I admire people like you. Not many people really give their heart to teach. So I admire them.
Again, thank you for your beautiful words. I’m honored. I hope I will be a good person too. Cheers.
